POTTSVILLE AREA HIGH SCHOOL PAINTING STUDENTS

All paintings are the result of studies prepared for class. Each study satisfied a requirement as outlined for the course. All of these works were done using only Alizarin Crimson, Ultramarine Blue, Cadmium Yellow, Medium and Titanium White. The subtle colors you see are the result of the student's command of color theory and mixing. The result is much more sophisticated than expected of a first or second experience in painting acrylic or oil. All works are done on canvas board. However, each student is invited to stretch their own raw canvas on wooden stretchers and prepare it with a priming medium at some time during the course. Many of these students have also completed that requirement.

All work has been done in Painting Class during school hours and as part of the requirements of the curriculum under the direction of Mrs. Beth Pillus, Art Instructor. The Art Department of PAHS includes Mark Dreisbach, Beth Pillus and is under the supervision of Andrew Makara, Lead Teacher.

Acrylic on Canvas board
Assad is a serious student and member of the Quiz Team enrolled in the College Prep curriculum and plans to enter a pre-med program when he attends college. Medicine's gain is art's loss. Assad quickly asserts his mastery over any medium to which he is introduced and is able to assimilate mUltiple concepts in preparation of his artwork. The Jungle Waterfall used washes and an impressionist approach to light and shadow.

Megan Brossman Sophomore
Lakeside Retreat
Acrylic on Canvas board
$50
Megan is enrolled in the College Preparatory curriculum and works part time. One of our stipulated lessons requires the student to study the work of an Impressionist painter and to create a work using the artist's style, palette and subject matter in an original work with a contemporary subject. Megan captured Monet's water filled landscape with this painting of metal chairs along the lake.

Chelsea Keip Sophomore
Night Reflections
Acrylic on Canvas board
$75
Chelsea is enrolled in the College Preparatory curriculum and is a member of the Sketch Club. Chelsea's ability to convert an ordinary scene with sunlight into a wonderful artwork is clearly evident here in her painting of a sunset using her command of color mixing and fearless application of paint.

Ablutions
Acrylic on Canvas board
$80

You can almost smell the shampoo in her sister's hair. She did the portrait from the rear because she was intimidated by the idea of showing a likeness. Her subsequent work has shown that she had no reason to doubt her abilities. Rachel's ability to render hair and skin tones is remarkable for her few short months of study.
