POTTSVILLE AREA HIGH SCHOOL PAINTING STUDENTS
All paintings are the result of studies prepared for class. Each study
satisfied a requirement as outlined for the course. All of these works were done
using only Alizarin Crimson, Ultramarine Blue, Cadmium Yellow, Medium and
Titanium White. The subtle colors you see are the result of the student's
command of color theory and mixing. The result is much more sophisticated than
expected of a first or second experience in painting acrylic or oil. All works
are done on canvas board. However, each student is invited to stretch their own
raw canvas on wooden stretchers and prepare it with a priming medium at some
time during the course. Many of these students have also completed that
requirement.
All work has been done in Painting Class during school hours
and as part of the requirements of the curriculum under the direction of Mrs.
Beth Pillus, Art Instructor. The Art Department of PAHS includes Mark Dreisbach,
Beth Pillus and is under the supervision of Andrew Makara, Lead Teacher.
Gloria Keyes Senior
View of Pottsville
Oil on Canvas board
Not for Sale
Gloria is a College Preparatory Student, Member of Sketch Club and Advanced
Placement Art Class. Gloria plans to attend college and pursue a degree in
Pharmacy. Her work shows a command of light and dimension far beyond her level.
For all her ability, she responds positively to the slightest suggestion and is
eager for knowledge.
Hilary Leiby Junior
Cartwheel on the Beach
Oil on Canvas board
Not for Sale
Hilary is a cheerleader and enrolled in the College Prep curriculum and plans to
major in fashion design and merchandising with a minor in journalism when she
enters college. Hilary's strength lies in her ability to evoke a mood and
displays a sense of playfulness, while using a sophisticated palette.
Kingsley Chaney Junior
Dockside at the Lake
Oil on Canvas board
Kingsley is also a cheerleader and enrolled in the College Prep curriculum and
plans to attend college. She was a fmalist for the Pottsville Republican artist
of the month for June. Kingsley is versatile and does her painting with a speed
that disguises her intense attention to detail and relationships of objects. The
reflection in the water shown here is one of her successful applications of
lessons learned.
Assad Butt Junior
Jungle Waterfall
Acrylic on Canvas board
Assad is a serious student and member of the Quiz Team enrolled in the College
Prep curriculum and plans to enter a pre-med program when he attends college.
Medicine's gain is art's loss. Assad quickly asserts his mastery over any medium
to which he is introduced and is able to assimilate mUltiple concepts in
preparation of his artwork. The Jungle Waterfall used washes and an
impressionist approach to light and shadow.
Megan Brossman Sophomore
Lakeside Retreat
Acrylic on Canvas board
$50
Megan is enrolled in the College Preparatory curriculum and works part
time. One of our stipulated lessons requires the student to study the work of an
Impressionist painter and to create a work using the artist's style, palette and
subject matter in an original work with a contemporary subject. Megan captured
Monet's water filled landscape with this painting of metal chairs along the
lake.
Chelsea Keip Sophomore
Night Reflections
Acrylic on Canvas board
$75
Chelsea is enrolled in the College Preparatory curriculum and is a member
of the Sketch Club. Chelsea's ability to convert an ordinary scene with sunlight
into a wonderful artwork is clearly evident here in her painting of a sunset
using her command of color mixing and fearless application of paint.
Delilah Miske Sophomore
Woodland Trail
Acrylic on Canvas board
$60
Delilah is enrolled in the College Preparatory curriculum and was chosen
as the Pottsville Republican "Artist of the Month" for the month of January.
Delilah is a quiet student who speaks forcefully with her artwork. Most of her
works are done independently and quickly with her ability to transform the
canvas into a careful blend of related colors.
Hannah Cappella Junior
Snowfall
Acrylic on Canvas board
Hannah is enrolled in the College Preparatory curriculum and is also a member of
Sketch Club. Hannah's strength is her willingness to try a myriad of new
approaches and accomplishes them all enthusiastically. This painting shows her
versatility and mastery of color. .
Rachel Holloway Sophomore
Ablutions
Acrylic on Canvas board
$80
Rachel is enrolled in the College Preparatory curriculum
and is also a member of Sketch Club. Rachel took a photo of her sister as she
exited the shower, dripping wet. You can almost smell the shampoo in her
sister's hair. She did the portrait from the rear because she was intimidated by
the idea of showing a likeness. Her subsequent work has shown that she had no
reason to doubt her abilities. Rachel's ability to render hair and skin tones is
remarkable for her few short months of study.
