When
the Game Was Just a Game.
Author
David Holland,
Mahanoy City native, Pottsville resident, Pine Grove Area teacher and noted
former basketball coach at Minersville, Nativity & Pine Grove High
Schools laments the transformation of the social--character-building--game of
playground basketball to
an individual-focused--esteem-depleting--game of
parent-driven organized basketball.
You've got to have an opinion about this one!
The game of basketball has boomed from
peach baskets, playgrounds, and tiny gymnasiums to multi-media presentations,
tax-increasing coliseums, and teenage multi-millionaires. With all of its
popularity, a serious question looms in the atmosphere that surrounds the sport.
Is the game really better today as opposed to a generation past, or has the
drive for scholarships, professional contracts, and sneaker endorsements caused
a simple ball to bounce the wrong way?
"When the Game Was Just a Game" is a comparative look at the game of basketball
from a time when a semi-worn spherical object surrounded by a group of young
players provided healthy competition, self-esteem, and friendships to a time
marred by too much organization, parental involvement, and expectations
exemplified and fostered by modern society.
Dave Holland is a high school social studies teacher in Pine
Grove, Pennsylvania. He was a high school basketball coach for eighteen years.
Dave presently resides in Pottsville, Pennsylvania, with his wife Cheryl, and
