The Judges
There will be three judges for each of the
preliminary rounds. Winners of the Semi-Finals and Finals will be determined by
audience vote.
Olwyn Beatty
Olwyn's
appreciation of music was fostered by her parents' respect for all aspects of
the performing arts. As a child, she studied piano and voice under the tutelage
of Marie K. Davis. Olwyn has directed performers from throughout Schuylkill
County in the Minersville Theatre Association's productions of Cabaret,
Anything Goes, Camelot, Shenandoah, and Annie. Most
recently, she appeared as Sister Robert Anne in the Association's production of
Nunsense. As a teacher at Minersville Area High School, Olwyn continues
to encourage young people to develop their music tastes and talents.
Jim Calderone
Jim has been a music lover for over 50 years,
growing up listening to the music of the 40's, 50's, 60's and 70's. Turning to
Jazz, Jim ran his own Club as owner of The Temperance House in Newtown, Pa,
presenting world-class entertainment seven days a week. In 1997 he was presented
the "Jazz Man of the Year" award by the Pennsylvania Jazz Society. In addition
to being Executive Chef at the Lazy Dog, he continues his music appreciation by
listening (and sitting in) whenever possible.
John Kozura
John's interest in music began in high school where he played
alto saxophone in the band and learned harmonies listening to the Beach Boys.
He had a solo in Minersville's first musical, South Pacific counterposed to Mark
Mahal. Singing karaoke, he and his duet partner took third place in a
five-state regional karaoke competition. John has judged numerous karaoke
competitions, from local events to the Pennsylvania State Karaoke Championship
held in Tunkhannock in 1999. He sings locally for benefits and frequents open
mike night at The Lazy Dog.
Mark Mahal
A rock
music historian & self professed BeatleManiac. His love for all musical genre
started as a child from doing Al Jolson at the age of 5 to his performance in
South Pacific in high school to now as lead vocalist/percussionist for the newly
formed group The Frantastics. His diverse musical road was paved from being the
Minersville area’s first bar/club DJ in the late 70s’ to heading the security
for shows of Pat Benatar , George Thorogood, Benny Mardones, The Hooters & many
more. You would be hard pressed to name a classic rock act that he hasn’t
experienced live. Mark is a life-long lover of live music - from Aerosmith to
Zeppelin, from Broadway to the back room and everything in between.
