Oktoberfest in Munich Germany, the largest festival in the world, is famous for its beers and sausages - but there is more to the Bavarian fair than that. Every year, an array of special events take place during Oktoberfest such as colorful parades and open-air concerts. These Oktoberfest events provide a great taste of Bavarian culture and tradition.
The first Oktoberfest was held in October of 1810 to celebrate the marriage of Bavarian Crown Prince Ludwig and Princess Therese. Princess Therese is the namesake for the location of Oktoberfest today, the Theresienwiese ("Wiese" means meadow). Locals also fondly refer to the Oktoberfest as die Wiesn.
Oktoberfest nowadays starts in September. In 2009, opening ceremonies will be held on Saturday September 19th. The festival will close Sunday October 4th.
Great Food, Great Drink, Great Atmosphere, Great Entertainment!
